2014-08-26: Mail to ST division: FYA: Questions for the VP dialogue (by 2014-09-14)

I have now updated the wiki with the timeline and the questions the CSE department wants each division to answer:

  http://wiki.portal.chalmers.se/cse/pmwiki.php/ST/VP2015

To help me prepare the answers for the ST division I would like your input by 2014-09-14 (in plain text or LaTeX). To structure the input a bit I would like you to coordinate the answers within four groups: FM, FP, ProSec, Teach. (More below [1].)

Friday 2014-09-19, from 10.00 to 12 there will be a "division dialogue" with the department steering group. Patrik + 3 more representing ST (ChCa, GeSc, DaSa).

After that the more detailed budgeting will start and I'd like to meet with each group in the week 2014-09-29/2014-10-03 (expect doodle mails later;-).

Thanks in advance,

Patrik

[1] Formally, the ST division does not have any internal organizational structure. In many cases it is good to view ST as having many (overlapping) research groups, course clusters etc. (often also overlappping with other divisions, etc.). But as we are almost 50 employees it is sometimes convenient to partition the division into subsets and for the current VP we use four subsets (called "groups" above): FM, FP, ProSec, Teach.

Activity planning (VP2015-2019) dialogue for divisions (at the CSE dept. Chalmers and GU) (Version 2014-08-25)

In preparation of the dialogue please consider the following questions and no later than three days before the meeting send a pdf-document with answers to Eva Axelsson.

Note: No forms need to be filled in before the VP dialogue (this will be done in late October).

1 Follow-up of last year’s Department and Division VP 2014-2018

1.1 What remains from last year's "VP-document"? Why? Consequences?

Last year's ST division VP document is in the ST git repo in ST/VP/2014/VP_ST_2014.pdf.

1.2 Will something change from 2014 to 2015 that will affect the division? Describe effects or consequences.

2. VP 2015-2019

During the last years VP work we have created a Strategic Map ("Strategisk karta") showing CSE’s vision for a "Sustainable future". In connection to the map there is a list of action points to work with over the next few year.

Links 2014:

2.1 Strategy

  • Is there missing any important issue in the CSE Strategic Map or in the action list that should be added.
  • What does the division consider to be the CSE department's most important questions or goals for the coming five years (with priorities)?

2.2 Trends and the world around us regarding research issues.

  • Should new or existing research areas be developed? If so, what possibilities for funding exist for these areas?
  • Comment on the long-term funding outlook (5 years). What are the important funding sources?
  • Are there research areas that will, or needs to, be discontinued? If so, will this lead to reduction of staff or require competence development?
  • What is the division’s involvement with the Areas of Advance at Chalmers? Describe current participation as well as intentions for future participation.
  • What is the division’s involvement with centres at Chalmers? Describe current participation as well as intentions for future participation.
  • What is the division’s contribution to society ("samhällsnyttan")?

2.3 Quality of the research

  • What is the quality of the research produced at the division? How is the quality assessed? Is there any on-going quality improvement work at the division to rectify possible shortcomings?

2.4 Education

  • What is the quality (in terms of course evaluation grades) of the courses at bachelor’s and master’s level for which the division is responsible?
  • How does the division work with systematic improvement of course quality based on course evaluations?
  • Are there any courses which should be moved to another division? Why?
  • How should the division/department work with strategic development of education in the next 5 years?
  • How does the division consider the education perspective in the future employments?
  • There has been approved several education projects from the Education Quality improvement program. If there are such projects in the division will it affect the education 2015 and forward in any way?

2.5 Personnel and capabilities

  • Estimate how the personnel will develop quantitatively over time (that is, increase, be constant or decrease compared to today). If possible, give estimations with respect to senior staff and doctoral students, and whether recruitments need to be done internationally or nationally.
  • Is there any plan, from division or any employee, for apply of partly retirement?
  • Is there a need at the division to employ "full-time" teachers (> 75% teaching)?
  • What is the division’s strategy for recruiting more female researchers?
  • Specify which employees will be up for promotion in a short-term (in accordance to Chalmers’ guidelines for the VP documents) and long-term perspective. Also indicate whether an employee that is up for promotion needs support from the department (e.g. extra time to take courses, write pedagogical portfolio and promotion application).

2.6 Outstanding internal environment

  • Describe the division’s strategy for promoting an outstanding internal environment.
  • Give some feedback from the division’s employees regarding the department’s Employeeship project ("Medarbetarskapsprojekt").
  • If there are employees (primarily permanent staff and assistant professors) that have not yet participated in the Employeeship project or Handledarforum, describe the division’s plan to rectify this within the next 12-month period.
  • HR-unit will if possible check the status of participation in "Medarbetarskapsprojektet" and "Handledarforum"

2.7 Administrative support (If any new)

  • What are the division’s experiences regarding the administrative support provided by the department (list positive and negative experiences)?
  • Is there a need at the division for additional administrative support?

2.8 Office availability (If any new)

  • What is the division’s view on the decreasing availability of offices at our campuses?
  • How can the division contribute to make more office space available?
  • Is the division willing to move to other premises?
  • Are the division’s employees willing to downsize (i.e. move to smaller offices)?

2.9 Summary of ‘action’ points for the division 2015 and some years forward.

  • What is the most important issues / action points the next few year for the division.
  • Is there a need for strategic funding from the department? If so, please state the purpose and motivate what the department will gain from it.
