How To Delay Windows Updates and Restart

It is important that you pause updates before you start a long simulation, or other activity that must not be interrupted.

To delay the update schedule for Windows 10, follow the instructions below. Please note that when these 35 days have passed or if the feature has been disabled, you cannot pause updates again until the computer has been updated with the latest patches.

  1. Settings | Update & Security | Check for updates
    • Let your computer search for updates and install them.
    • Restart your computer, unless it already did restart after the updates.
  2. Next, go to Settings | Update & Security | Advanced options
  3. Click on Pause Updates.
  4. Updates are now paused for 7 days.

If you like to extend this even further, then click on Advanced Options and select a date from the menu Pause until.

What if the computer is already going to restart?

If the computer is counting down the remaining time until a restart, there is unfortunately no way to cancel it.

Not even the IT Office can help you cancel the countdown to restart once it has begun.

For this reason, you should take care to pause updates according to the instructions above before you initiate a long running activity that must not be interrupted.

NOTE: The Pause Updates feature is available only in Windows 10 v1709 and later
