Bachelor

Bachelor projects

Welcome to the Theoretical subatomic physics group. We're looking forward to working together with you on your bachelor thesis project. Below is some relevant information concerning your project work. This information is also relevant for bachelor projects performed in the Experimental subatomic physics group.

  • Please check for Chalmers guidelines at

Studentportalen (here you will also find information regarding design and publication of the final thesis).

  • We strongly advocate a structured approach to project management and (in particular to) software development. Useful literature and web resources are collected at this page.
  • Experience has revealed a strong correlation between the quality of the final report and an early started and well structured writing process (with cross reading and having time for several iterations).

Key persons:

  • Lena Falk (Examiner of Bachelor Projects at the Department of Physics, lklfalk_at_chalmers.se)
  • Jan Swenson (Examiner of Bachelor Projects at the Department of Physics, jan.swenson_at_chalmers.se)
  • Jonathan Weidow (Program Coordinator, Engineering Physics, jonathan.weidow_at_chalmers.se)
  • Håkan Johansson (Local Computer System Administrator, f96hajo_at_chalmers.se)

Practicalities:

  1. Office and common facilities:
    • Talk to supervisor regarding office space.
    • Supervisor meetings are often held in F8106.
    • If applicable, request floor 8 after-hours access on your entrance card (ask supervisor).
    • Common facilities (laboratory and student room) can be accessed with a PIN code (please ask for it if applicable).
  2. Local computers (if applicable):
    • Some projects will require access to the local computer farm.
    • Read the information in the welcome package: subcomp.pdf
    • Please collect a list of your CIDs and email them to Håkan Johansson at f96hajo_at_chalmers.se
  3. Instructions:
    • Study the guidelines at Chalmers Studentportalen.
    • It's recommended to discuss practicalities (log book etc.) and set up a contract between group members (see template at Studentportalen).

Project guidelines:

The general requirements for Bachelor projects at Chalmers include:

  1. Project log book with continuous entries
  2. Individual time log
  3. Planning report (deadline in week 4 of period 3)
  4. General competence lectures (program specific).
  5. Supervision on writing (Fackspråk).
  6. Interim progress meeting with supervisor.
  7. Final written report (end of period 4). Note strict page limit.
  8. Written and oral opposition on one other groups' project presentation,
  9. Oral presentation (end of May / beginning of June)

Note that the bachelor thesis is usually written in Swedish. Please discuss with your supervisor if there is a reason to write in English. You will then also need the permission from Jonathan who will most likely ask you to also produce an executive summary in Swedish.

A bachelor project in our group also includes:

  • Regular meetings with your project supervisor (about once per week).
  • Reading and adhering to our writing guidelines.

2023 projects

  • TIFX11-23-02: Higgsbosonen har fyllt tio
  • TIFX11-23-03: Kvantmekaniks sammanflätning i nukleon-nukleon spridning
  • TIFX11-23-22: Neutronstjärnor, maskininlärning och tunga grundämnens ursprung i universum
