New in Sweden

This is information important for new non-swedish collaborators.

Personal identity number

In Sweden every registered resident has a personal identity number, a “personnummer”. This number is used in nearly all official transactions, at the bank, hospitals etc. A personal number consists of ten digits: year, month and date of birth, plus four extra digits. If you intend to stay one year or more in Sweden, you should apply in person for a personal identity number at the local tax office (“lokala skattemyndigheten” or "skatteverket"). You should bring your Chalmers contract, lease contract and passport with you. Citizen of an EU or EEA country can directly apply for a "personnummer" without contacting the Swedish Migration Agency. For more information see http://www.skatteverket.se/

ID-kort

Since 2016 you need a Swedish "ID-kort" to open a bank account. You can apply for an "ID-kort" at the skatteverket as soon as you have a "personnummer", however not all offices of the skatteverket offer this service. Before you apply for an "ID-kort" you have to pay a fee of 400,- SEK by bank transfer. With the receipt of the bank transfer and your passport you can go the skatteverket and do the application. After two weeks (or more) you can pic up your ID-kort. For more information see http://www.skatteverket.se/

Bank Account

Once you have your personnummer and an ID-kort, you can open a bank account (Nordea Bank is suggested). In case you already got the first payment slits from Chalmers you can cash them in one of Forex's branches.

If you don't have your personnummer and an ID-kort:

1. The money can be transferred on another Swedish bank account, for example of a colleague or friend.
2. The money can be transferred on your bank account from another country.
3. You can open temporary Swedish bank account without Swedish personal identity number in SEB bank (the only way during summer 2019). You need to bring the following to the bank:

  • passport
  • employment contract from Chalmers
  • confirmation from Skatteverket that a personal identity number application has been submitted

After about 2 weeks you’ll get the card on your post address. (Admin note 2024: Please verify with SEB bank that they still open bank accounts to people without a personal number)

This might be helpful to pay your rent or do other bank transfers. Please do not hesitate to ask your colleagues for help!

Swedish classes

Swedish for beginners classes are given in Chalmers. Registration is required and Chalmers employees can register for free here.

  • Disclaimer: Regulations regarding personal number, residence permit, etc. can change often. Always consult with the official pages of Skatteverket and Migrationsverket
